First edition thus. [viii], 472 pp. 8vo. Red cloth, spine gilt, upper cover titled in gilt and stamped in blind. Spine a bit faded. Very good. Ownership signature of Siegfried Sassoon on pastedown, and book label.
Item #379946
This volume gathers the Poems and four Masks (Prometheus the Firegiver, Demeter, Eros and Psyche, and The Growth of Love) from the collected editions of the Poetical Works, and collects or publishes for the first time two groups of Later Poems and Poems in Classical Prosody.
Poet Siegfried Sassoon’s copy, with his ownership signature and two annotations in his precise hand, adding the identification of surnames in two Books in the Shorter Poems, the first is dedicated to H.E. Woolridge; and Book II To the memory of G.M.H. (Sassoon marking it to Hopkins). Bridges was the great champion of Hopkins, and editor of the 1918 Poems, which Sassoon owned.
A nice link between the late Victorian and the modern generation of poets shaped by their wartime experiences.
