S. Augustus Mitchell acquired the publishing rights to Henry Tanner's atlas in 1846 and continued publishing it until 1849. In 1850 the copyright passed to Thomas Cowperthwait & Co. and was subsequently acquired by Charles Desilver in 1856. His 1856 edition "shows many updates from earlier editions, indicating ongoing changes in territorial understanding and mapping precision" (Rumsey).
