“So far as verse is concerned, it is our business to point out what poetic utterance really is, and what it is not; to urge the intense, sincere, original, symbolic, concrete recording of moods, pictures, and impressions in suitable language and cadences, and give warning against false or feeble sentiment, cheap second-hand platitudes, trite moralisings, chaotic images, prose psychology and presentation, inappropriate form, clumsy, inept, incorrect, or incoherent diction, and bad rhyme and metre.”
Review column by H.P. Lovecraft on recent poetry, pages 5-6 in the issue of the National Amateur for June 1935. Lovecraft (1890-1937) always remembered his roots in the amateur press movement; he had been the President of the National Amateur Press Association in 1922.
With a copy of The National Amateur, vo. 67, no. 2, for December 1944, reprinting “Further Criticism of Poetry”, an essay of Lovecraft’s from 1932.
