Alfred Pretor (1840-1908), fellow of St Catherine’s, Cambridge, translator of Persius and author of Ronald and I (1899), The Chapel on the Hill (1904), and other works. Pretor was the boy at Harrow who in 1858 confessed to John Addington Symonds he had been having an affair with the school’s headmaster Charles Vaughan. Symonds senior then put a stop to Vaughan’s public advancement with the threat of exposure if his embargo were disobeyed. Pretor never forgave Symonds for blabbing to his father and kept up with Vaughan lifelong. He never married.
