Louisa Leila Waterhouse Hawkins (1841-1912) was the daughter of the celebrated nature artist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins (1807-94) – illustrator for Darwin and Thomas Henry Huxley, who made the models for 'Dinosaur Court' at Crystal Palace Park for Richard Owen – and artist Francis Louisa Keenan (herself the daughter of two prominent artists). Francis Keenan discovered that Mr. Hawkins had married her bigamously in 1836, and their marriage deteriorated in the 1870s, when he fled to America with his other family, leaving the two women to make their livings with their art. He eventually returned and remarried Francis, but they never lived together again. Leila's works are at the V & A and BM.
