George Ade (b.1866 - d.1944) was an American humorist who was well known for his column in the Chicago Record, "Stories of the Streets and of the Town", which used street language and slang to describe daily life in Chicago, often humorous stories that featured a liberal use of capitalization in his characters' dialog. His success earned him the nickname "The Aesop of Indiana."

Artie is his first collection of such stories and follows a young Loop office worker through a series of sketches first developed in Ade's column. It's success warranted multiple printings, this being a later reprinting that feature John T. McCutcheon's illustrations on the cover wrappers, making it comparatively scarce.
