Poems was published by a private press in Brazil the year before Jorge De Lima died at the age of sixty. De Lima was an established author with several novels and books of poetry published when Ruth Herschberger's first two books, A Way of Happening, a collection of poetry, and Adam's Rib, a collection of feminist essays were both published in 1948. Adam's Rib, hailed as an early feminist text ahead of it's time, discussed issues such as rape and abortion. De Lima was a practicing Roman Catholic and much of his poetry reflected these themes. Here he's inscribed what appears to have been a personal copy of this book, "To Miss Ruth Herschberger in token of the admiration of a Brazilian poet. -Jorge De Lima, Rio De Janeiro, 1-10-52"
