"The item appeared first in the New York Journal, June 22-23, 1897. The frontispiece engravings of the procession did not appear in the Journal article but the illustrated absurdities at pp. 2-3 are from the original appearance. It was written in London when the author was busy seeing whether his new book, Following the Equator, would pay his debts. It is newspaper correspondence and was not intended as one of his 'works.' It was later included in Europe and Elsewhere. The book collated above was not authorized by either the Journal or any other authority." (Johnson, p. 93).
