For the publisher's mock-up:
Single sheet of beige cardstock, folded once to make four twelvemo pages, printed in red (with paste-on mock-up printed in black). Prints a twenty-five line statement by Walt Whitman, beginning: "Political democracy, as it exists and practically works in America, with all its threatening evils, supplied a training-school for making first-class men..." (dated 1871). The front cover is printed and decorated in red lettering; also present are two separate pieces of printed cardstock with black lettering (with light glue marks on cover and verso of cardstock pieces, where publisher's "mock-up" revisions were lightly affixed over the red lettering on front cover). Printer's decorative ornaments (printed in red) are affixed above and below Whitman's printed text.
