The complete New York Trilogy, Paul Auster's classic meta-fictional detective story, with each copy inscribed by the author to poet Clark Coolidge.
This was Auster's second work and his signature theme of the search for identity and his brand of American existentialism appear fully formed here. The trilogy is not only set in New York, it uses Manhattan's grid layout as an integral part of the story. It established him as a writer to watch, and indeed Auster has since published another fourteen novels, as well as poetry, memoirs and screenplays.
