"To Alfred Eisenstaedt / with admiration for his / art and appreciation for his / comradeship / Jonathan Daniels / Raleigh, N.C. July 9, 1938"
Daniels was editor the Raleigh, North Carolina, News and Observer. In 1938 he published his account of a ten-state tour of the South he'd taken the year before, A Southerner Discovers the South. Following the positive reception of the book, Daniels returned to South Carolina in 1938 with Eisenstaedt for a piece for Life magazine.
The leaf is removed from one of the albums Eisenstaedt kept througout his career in which he would have the subjects of his photographs write inscriptions. On the reverse of this leaf is an inscription of Maine Governor LEWIS O. BARROWS.
