Charles Latrobe (1801-1875) was born in London and came to America in 1832. After visiting the chief cities in the States, he sailed down the Mississippi to New Orleans, and, in company with Washington Irving, struck out across the prairies and then into Mexico. There Latrobe became fascinated by the lives of Indians, saints, ruins, bullfights, and the opera. Prescott remarked of this work:.
