Not long after publication of AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY and at the height of his fame, novelist Theodore Dreiser responds to a letter from Portland, Oregon, collector Frederick W. Skiff, who later sold his American literature collection to Mrs. Estelle Doheny, “I think you had best take a look at the portrait in the April Vanity Fair. If that pleases I will secure a copy of that. Once more my thanks for your invitation & kind thoughts. I may get to Portland at that. Theodore Dreiser”.
