Signed by the author on the title. This was later expanded and reissued as “Gold Rush Days with Mark Twain,” 1930.¶ Steve Gillis had gone to San Francisco in 1853 and worked on the “San Francisco Herald” during the days of the Vigilantes and the resurrection of San Francisco until 1857 when he headed to Oregon to work on the “Messenger.” In 1861 when the “Territorial Enterprise” was established at Virginia City Gillis went there and it was there that he became close friends with Mark Twain, Dan DeQuille and others writers.
