Original Huck Finn Illustration by Worth Brehm

Illustration for Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

[New York]: 1923.

Charcoal on artist's board, signed (lower left). 1 vols. 23 x 17-3/4 in. Original Huck Finn Illustration by Worth Brehm. Matted and framed. Fine. Literature: Clemens, Huckleberry Finn (Harper & Bros., 1923). Item #12462

A poignant and surperbly drawn depiction of the scene when Huck, out hunting on Jackson's Island, meets the runaway slave, Jim.

Huck stands at the left of the drawing, while Jim, at the foot of a large tree, kneels in supplication. The drama of the moment is enhanced by the artist's use of light, which, coming from behind Huck, falls on the tree, bringing the figure of Jim into sharp relief. This is one of the finest Brehm drawings we have ever see.
