Item #40070

MICHAEL SADLEIR'S COPY of the scarce first edition of one the great historical novels. Set in of the latter part of the 15-century, and against a background of the Reformation, the invention of printing, and a wealth of historical characters such as Luther, Deschamps, Villon, and Erasmus (as a child), Reade weaves a rich tapestry revolving around the tragic love-story of Erasmus' parents.

Very scarce in the original cloth, this is an exceptional copy with the distinguished provenance of the great collector and bibliographer of 19th-century fiction, Michael Sadleir.
