After Hardy's death, Sydney Cockerell applied the red Max Gate book label to all books from the author's library that were signed or annotated, while Hardy's widow, Florence, applied black labels to books owned by Hardy but not annotated. Hardy's library was dispersed by Hodgson's on 26 May 1938.
