"Quite the most original and prosperous of poetry journals at the beginning of the 19th century" (Graham), The Poetical magazine is an important color plate work notable for the first appearance of the famous Doctor Syntax: The Schoolmaster's Tour ran through all four volumes of the publication and was subsequently reprinted in book form. Abbey notes that the poem "was composed by William Combe from the drawings of Rowlandson, and not, as would be expected, vice versa." A fine copy.
