Mein was the owner of the "London Bookshop" and a lending library; one of his patrons was John Adams. Quickly becoming popular, the shop began to gross £80 weekly. Mein was elected a Boston constable, a post he never could have attained without Sam Adam's approval. By late 1767 he felt himself able to undertake publication of a twice-weekly newspaper, the Boston Chronicle.
