Scarce uniform edition of the novels and tales of the erratic and troubled Henry Kingsley (1830 - 1876), younger brother of Charles Kingsley. This uniform set, albeit without a general title-page, seems complete as issued by the publisher under Clement Shorter’s editorial supervision, and Shorter has supplied useful notes to each volume as well as a ‘Memoir of Henry Kingsley’ to The Memoirs of Geoffrey Hamlin. NCBEL notes a collected edition of ‘1894-95’ of 8 volumes only; OCLC records 5 libraries holding copies of this 12-volume set from Ward, Lock & Bowden.
S.M. Ellis, according to Kunitz & Haycraft, “has attributed Kingsley’s marked interest in youthful masculine beauty and physical perfection, his tendency to glorify the English gentleman in his more virile aspects, his ‘muscular Christinaity.’ to a strain of homosexuality.”.
