Drypoint etching of a woodcock in flight above a marshy covert, signed by the artist in pencil in lower right, and titled in pencil lower left. 1 vols. Image 8-1/2 x 13-3/4 inches, matted and framed to 14-1/2 x 19 inches overall. SUPERB ETCHING OF LONE WOODCOCK BY A. LASSELL RIPLEY. Fine Siegel, pp. 220-1. Item #57590
A. Lassell Ripley (1896-1969), studied art in Boston, was a student of Frank Benson, and after a stint of teaching drawing at the Harvard School of Architecture, devoted himself to a career in art. He illustrated five books for The Derrydale Press, was an accomplished landscape and portrait painter, and was widely known for his sporting etchings and watercolors of upland shooting scenes.
Ripley's woodcock prints are scarce; this is a particularly choice example.
