A. Lassell Ripley (1896-1969), studied art in Boston, was a student of Frank Benson, and after a stint of teaching drawing at the Harvard School of Architecture, devoted himself to a career in art. He illustrated five books for The Derrydale Press, was an accomplished landscape and portrait painter, and was widely known for his sporting etchings and watercolors of upland shooting scenes.

Ripley's woodcock prints are scarce; this is a particularly choice example.
