Account of hunting adventures and the life style of the Eskimos in in the Arctic by this friend of Peary's and Cook's, described in his sub-title as "the battle for existence through the long Arctic night." A great hunting book, an exciting tale of Arctic adventure with close observations of the Eskimos, and also an important primary source regarding the Cook-Peary controvery, as Whitney was staying in Cook's house in Anootok in April of 1908 when Cook claimed to have reached the North Pole. The book is dedicated to Captain Robert Barlett, Captain of the Roosevelt on Peary's last attempt at the pole in 1908.
