Beatrice Kaufman (1895-1945) was the wife of wife George S. Kaufman, a playwright in her own right, and the East Coast representative of Samuel Goldwyn Pictures. It was Beatrice who, upon reading the galleys of Steinbeck’s OF MICE AND MEN sent to her by Steinbeck’s agent Annie Laurie Williams, immediately recognized the dramatic possibilities of the novel and rushed the galleys to her husband. And it was Kaufmann who then acquired the dramatic rights and eventually produced the successful 1937 stage version which ran for 207 performances and became the basis for two subsequent film versions.
