The science of equitation and the means of teaching it developed primarily in 16th century Italy, and moved northward through Europe to England in the ensuing centuries. As time went on, techniques were refined, but the plates in early Italian and Continental manuals, such as this one, have seldom been equaled, much less surpassed.
