Washburn was a friend to Presidents Taft and T. Roosevelt. He was also a member of the House of Representatives and a graduate of Harvard University as well as a graduate and a trustee of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The letter reads in part: "I feel that it would be very imprudent and indeed impossible for me to make a promise [ to attend th celebration of the 50th anniversary of Worcester Polytechnic] at this time with regard to June of next year, for I cannot yet form the least conjecture even as to what my duties and obligations at that time may be..."
