Haynes was located in Moorhead, MN from 1877 to 1879, when he moved his studio to Fargo and became official photographer to the Northern Pacific Railroad and Yellowstone Park, to great success. His early Red River Valley series documented the beginings large-scale "bonanza" farms. George Cass, who owned the first bonanza farm with Benjamin Cheney, was also president of the Northern Pacific Railroad.
