Following the death of King George I in 1727, the Bishop of London here re-submits to George II his petition that instructions be sent to the Governors of the Plantations in America to vigourously enforce laws against blasphemy, prophaneness, adultery, fornication, polygamy, incest, prophanation of the Lord's day, swearing and drunkenness. However, unlike the previous petition submitted to George I, the present commission would be confined over the clergy of America alone.
The reason for the petition in part relates to the question of whether the crown would appoint a bishop in America, a controversial proposition, but also due to the perceived waning power of Protestant religion in America.
Scarce, with ESTC locating only three other examples (Lambeth Palace Library, National Library of Scotland and Library of Congress).
