Excellent and personal letter from author Margaret Mitchell during production of Gone with the Wind, reporting her impressions on production stills (not present) from the filming of the blockbuster movie (which would be released in December 1939).
Reading (in part):
“The seven pictures arrived yesterday afternoon. I thank you for sending them and I thank Mr. Selznick for his courtesy in wanting me to see them. A number of the cast hae been merely names to me […] There is one thing I find especially touching -- perhaps because I am the author -- Carreen looks so much her mother’s child, in expression and gesture and dependence. I do not know how such things are managed in the moving pictures, but this seems beautifully subtle to me.”
Mitchell pledges to respect the confidential nature of the photographs sent her, and reports that she is not the source of the newspaper pictures published the day before. “One of our afternoon papers carried an entire page of stills […] I do not know where the papers got the pictures, but they did not come from me.”.
