W.E.B. Du Bois's copy of an important work in the historiography of Reconstruction and the immediate post-Reconstruction period, including a lengthy quote from the Souls of Black Folk on p. 398-399. At the time of the book's publication, Du Bois was working with the Niagara Movement, publishing his short-lived periodical Moon Illustrated Weekly. Interestingly, the Du Bois papers at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst includes a letter from Merriam to Du Bois concerning the publication of the Moon Illustrated Weekly.
