The best edition (and the source for many Oxford re-issues), comprising Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. The plates include fashions, views, and reproductions of title pages. As Kathryn Sutherland noted, it is Chapman’s edition and the Oxford imprimatur that brought Jane Austen to universal acclaim and attention
Several interesting clippings are loosely inserted, most notably Edward Marsh’s “Some Notes on Miss Austen’s Novels” (London Mercury, 1924), Gilson M430; a contemporary review by “Our dramatic critic”; and R.W. Chapman’s essay “Jane Austen’s Texts” from the TLS for 13 February 1937, Gilson M634, and others. This is Anthony Hobson’s set, with his distinctive handwriting identifying a clipped description of another copy from the Gloucester Road bookshop.
