Typed Letter, signed "Marianne Moore" and annotated, to Emily Nathan.
Brooklyn: May 13, 1962.
8vo. Fine Item #366083
Moore writes to Emily Nathan, journalist and public relations executive, with a suggestion for a slogan for the Pulitzer School of Journalism at Columbia:
"The mind of mankind enlarged by knowledge —
with freedom to use it moves toward a world informed."
She goes on to let Nathan know that she may edit the statement however she sees fit, without further input from Moore. It could be that the idea was edited beyond recognition, but it's likely that the statement was too oblique – too very intellectually precise in the line of her poetry – to have ever been used at all.
Moore won the Pulitzer prize in 1951 for her Collected Poems.
