A superb and highly specialized production by one of the master angler, fly tier and author Vernon S. “Pete” Hidy, whose friendship with Jim Leisenring is at the heart of his first book, The Art of Tying the Wet Fly By James E. Leisenring as Told to V.S. Hidy (1941).
Hidy has inscribed a small fly wallet “For John McCormac, Good Luck! from Pete Hidy who tied these flymphs for the plesure of the trout in Silver Creek, the South Fork … and John. Boise Idaho, April 1970” The wallet is in the same style as the famed Leisenring Color & Materials Book (1965-66) and holds two dozen flymphs, 6 jassids, and a couple of nymphs tied by Hidy. There is an additional folder of 6 nymphs on tiny hooks. In addition to the custom made felt lined box holding supplies and tools necessary for tying flymphs to Hidy’s patterns, the box includes a typed letter signed “Pete”, to the McCormac family (18 May 1976), several articles about Hidy in newspapers, newsletters, an article by him in the Bulletin of the Anglers’ Club 53:3 (Autumn 1974), two photographs captioned on the versos (Hidy and his wife Elaine; the Hidy and the McCormac families), and a 1983 letter from Elaine Hidy to the McCormacs. The box has a printed label of The International Society of Flymph Fishermen, inscribed by Hidy at Christmas 1974.
With two inscribed copies of Hidy’s books: Sports Illustrated Fly Fishing (1963) and The Pleasures of Fly Fishing (1972). Hidy has identified half a dozen photographs by McCormac appearing in the second book, including some nice portraits of Hidy on the river. With a copy of The Art of Tying the Wet Fly & Fishing the Flymph (1971).
