Hardy's novel was first issued serially from July 4 to December 26 in 1891 in a bowdlerized version; here is its first appearance in book form, for which Hardy was able to restore the original plot. The first impression was issued in an edition of 1000 copies; a second impression was issued (with date 1892) of 500 copies, with minor spelling corrections incorporated.
