Item #354170

First separate edition of this long Blakean poem inspired by Stanley Spencer’s giant painting, and manifesting Spencer’s assertion, “Everything has a sort of double meaning for me, there’s the ordinary everyday meaning of things, and the imaginary meaning about it all”. The painting is now held in the Tate Gallery.
Davenport’s poem, rich in his own double meanings and allusions, was originally published in Poetry in 1967.
A beautiful little book.
