The author was one of the Assistant Ministers of Trinity Church. He had published a pamphlet entitled “A Solemn appeal to the Church” questioning some actions of the church, which caused “great distress” to the church. The church's reaction he blamed in part on John Henry Hobart, later Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church, but at that time Assistant Bishop of New York, and this work defends and attempts to provide the true facts of the situation.
