Signed and inscribed to Murray Walch by the author on the ffep on the half-title. Stevens inscriptions are rare. Stevens' magesterial meditation on the relationship between the imagination and reality, delivered as a lecture at Princeton in 1942, while the world was at war. Its title comes from Stevens' poem "Angel Surrounded by Paysans", a name he gave to an untitled still life by Tal-Coat, which Stevens owned.
