First volume of this chess journal. The early volumes were called “Dubuque Chess Journal” and “Brownson's Chess Journal,” then in 1876 the title was changed to “The American Chess Journal ”and then in 1877 returned to “Chess Journal.”¶ The portrait photograph is inserted between a problem by Edward H. Courtnay and problems by Ludwig von Bilou.
