With pencil portrait of Malcolm Cowley by Thurber on the ffep, entitled "Portait of the Artist as a Young Man" signed by him, additionally signed by Cowley on the half-title and with a fine signed pencil drawing by Thurber opposite the title-page entitled "Perhaps it was Henderson," which is the title of a chapter in the book.

The book is dedicated to Thurber, who was a lifelong fixture at the New Yorker like Coates. Three chapters from this book were published in that magazine prior to publication here. Coates and Cowley were friends going back to their days as a part of Gertrude Stein's circle in Paris. The 1975 edition of Yesterday's Burden included an afterward by Malcolm Cowley
