London: Putnam, 1924.

Inscribed on the front flyleaf, Isabel Adams from Leslie Hartley.
An outstanding copy of the first book from this L.P. Hartley (1895-1972), whose other works included The Go-Between (1953), with the famous opening sentence, “The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.”, which “can be taken metaphorically, but also as a more literal iteration of the strangeness of the world and its stories” (SFE).
