James Laughlin (1914-1997) was an American poet and publisher who founded New Directions Publishing. The photo was used in the broadside, The Kitchen Clock (Louisville: White Fields Press, 1995). Several of the portraits for these broadsides were taken by press co-founder Ron Whitehead, but the image is unattributed on the broadside as here.
