The recipient is Professor John Boyes of Newcastle Upon Tyne (with original 1954 receipt, from Edinburgh bookseller William Brown, noting that the author has signed the book).

Sydney Goodsir Smith (1915-1975), Scottish poet and playwright, was born in Wellington, New Zealand and moved to Edinburgh in 1928, and he attended Edinburgh University. His first collection of verse was published in 1941 ('Skail Wind').
