A superb set of the rare deerstalking albums of career soldier Henry Hope Crealock (1831-1891), who served in Crimea, India, China, and in the war in Zululand. His sketches from the field of battle were published in the Illustrated London News. He was a noted shot and spent considerable portions of his leave stalking in Scotland, and produced a remarkable record of the sport in Victorian times. The four portfolios, issued by George Hogarth Turner, are photographic reproductions of Crealock’s drawings and vignettes, usually captioned and keyed to the narrative accounts of the stalks or a list of the illustrations. In the Forest of Balmacaan has a letterpress folio dedication page with list ofplates; for others of the portfolios, the text was issued as a separate pamphlet; in this copy these texts are mounted on the album leaves.

Deer-Stalking in the Highlands of Scotland (1892) is a later, smaller format memorial compendium edited by his brother and issued as a printed book. While the portfolios are sometimes, uncommonly, encountered individually, it is rare to see a complete set.
