"J.J." Lankes (1884 – 1960) was an illustrator, a woodcut print artist, author, and college professor. He illustrated works for many notable authors, including poet Robert Frost, American author Sherwood Anderson, and British author Beatrix Potter.
Included in this collection: fifteen woodcut print holiday cards: Village, Twilight (x2), Holiday Time, Sunday Afternoon, Whitaker's Road, Winter, New Year's Day, [Three Magi], [Shepherd] (x2), Merry Christmas (x2), [Street Band], and [Snow Scene]. Three cards contain manuscript correspondence from Mary Hendershot to Private Martin K. Howes. Also included are three woodcut pamphlets – Virginia Woodcuts, Christmas Cards Designed For You by America's Foremost Artists, in which Lankes is listed alongside Diego Rivera and Jose Orozco among others, and Woodcut Proofs, which includes a manuscript letter and postcard addressed to Private Howes from Lankes [dated 1933]; as well as J.J. Lankes Illustrates Robert Frost "Neither Out Far Nor In Deep" Christmas, 1935 (Limited Edition, published 2005), one of 1500 copies.
