Superior set of the ambitious work which long preoccupied Richard Hughes (1900-1976), author of A High Wind in Jamaica (1929). Hughes worked as a bureaucrat in the Admiarly during the secon world war, with little time for his own writings. As John Crowley has observed, “a project unsustainably huge had been growing in him, an attempt to understand the abyss of war and how Europe was sucked into it, and a way to express what he understood”. Only two volumes of The Human Predicament were published; at his death Hughes left a dozen chapters of the unfinished third volume.
