Muirhead states: "The most important work on general pedagogy to appear in this country between... Locke's Thoughts... and Herbert Spencer's Essay in 1861" [Muirhead. The English at School, 57]. Maria Edgeworth is also the author of a number of novels and books for children, including Parents Assistant (1796), Early Lessons (1801), Moral Tales (1801), Harry and Lucy (1825), etc. In 1809 she collaborated with her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, on Essays on Professional Education [see Welch. Oxford Companion to Irish Literature, p. 167].
