Hoyle’s Short Treatise on Whist circulated in manuscript among his pupils, and was expanded for publication in 1742. Hoyle sold the copyright to Francis Cogan, but two piracies came out before Cogan’s official second edition. This is the first of the two, printed by James Mechell with a fictitious publisher's name, Webster (the other piracy uses the name Webb).
All the early editions are rare.
