Nye (1850-1896)) moved to Laramie City, Wyoming Territory in 1876, serving as a justice of the peace. In 1881 he founded the newspaper the Laramie Boomerang, which he edited from 1881 to 1884, and forged a reputation for his stories of frontier humor. His first collection of humorous tales was published as Bill Nye and Boomerang (1881), with the present Forty Liars and other Lies (1882) following.

Nineteenth century pictorial dust jackets are very scarce. The upper panel depicts a farmer leading a column of hogs, repeating the illustration on page. 13; the rear panel is an advertisement for the Laramie Boomerang.
