During the colonial era the monopoly on printing English bibles belonged to the Royal Printer, and the colonies were supplied entirely with bibles printed in England. With the Declaration of Independence, the British monopoly on English-language bibles naturally ended. Robert Aitken, a Philadelphia printer, undertook the task of printing the first American New Testament in English in 1777 and a handful of other American publishers soon followed, including Isaac Collins. "One of three editions of the New Testament printed in New Jersey in 1788, following earlier New Jersey printings in 1779 and 1782" (Felcone).
With provenance likely to Mary Kirkbride (1769-1846) of Bucks County, Pennsylvania (just across the river from Trenton), who married Joseph Knowles in 1795. ESTC locates ten examples.
