After suffering a severe illness in 1776, Public Universal Friend (1752-1819), born Jemima Wikinson, claimed to have died and been reanimated as a genderless evangelist and afterward shunned both birth name and gendered pronouns. In androgynous clothes, the Friend preached throughout the northeastern United States, attracting many followers who became known as the Society of Universal Friends.
In the late 1780s, Friend and followers settled in western New York, on tracts of land from the Phelps and Gorham Purchase and founded the town of Jerusalem. The present deed records the sale of land between Seneca Lake and Canandaigua Lake (Phelps and Gorham Purchase, township nine, second range, lot 49) from James Parker to Freelove Hathaway, Jr., presumably Eunice Hathaway -- Freelove Hathaway's daughter, a devout follower of Friend and among the group of celibate women who are sometimes referred to as The Faithful Sisterhood.
