Soprano Mary Garden (1874-1967), writes to literary patron John Quinn, after the death of James Huneker, “Oh! if only you had told me of the need Mrs Huneker was in right after the death of my dear Mr. Huneker … I should have loved doing something for the memory of Mr. Huneker”
Huneker’s book Bedouins (1920) had largely been devoted to Garden, and he had praised “the gift of versatility” in his chronicle of her performances; Quinn was a close friend of Huneker, who dedicated Ivory Apes and Peacocks (1915) to Quinn.
